Akwa Ibom is a homogeneous ethnic group who originated from a single ancestral stock-the Bantus that migrated from East Central Africa during the historic expeditions of the 31 Century. The people have a common linguistic heritage with minor variations. On September 23, 1987, the state was created out of old Cross-River state by Gen.

Ibrahim Babagida administration. The creation was a climax of a long and sustained struggle by the people of the region for their own distinct centre of development and political identity. The state pioneered the first local government in Nigeria- Ikot Ekpene local government created in 1951 by the colonial government.  

Boundaries/Neighbours:

In the North is Abia and Cross River States, in the South is Atlantic Ocean, in the east is also Cross River State, in the West is Rivers and Abia States.

Topography:

The physical relief of the state is flat. In Itu and Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area the altitude is as high as 200 feet above sea level, while some areas are valleys filled with Marshes like those in Ikot Abasi and Ukanafun Local Government Areas; there are also Marshy soil around the banks of the Qua Iboe River in Eket, the creeks of Ikot Abasi and Itu and the estuaries in Oron.

Climate:

The state lies within the tropical zone. The state has two main seasons – the rain and dry seasons. The rain season begins from March through October, while the dry season last from November to April. The Harmattan dry cold wind starts by December and last until early January.

Education:

The State has 1,072 pre-primary and primary schools, 248 secondary schools made up of 5 science colleges, 7 technical and 236 general secondary schools. The state also has one Polytechnic, one College of Education and one Federal University; University of Uyo. In addition, the state has 731 Adult Education Centre (233 assisted by UNDP). The state also host the Maritime Academy of Nigeria at Oron

Economy:

The people are mainly farmers, traders. Wood carving, Raffia works and blacksmithing are also popular among the Natives. The state is rich in petroleum and as such enjoys high level of oil exploration. Akwa Ibom state is among the oil producing states. This has attracted oil firms into the state, among them are; Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria Limited. Akwa Ibom enjoys a high degree of peace. The state has enjoyed an unprecedented infrastructural development under the present Government. Akwa Ibom state is investor/visitor friendly. The state shares border with one of Nigeria’s largest commercial towns- Aba. Investor will definitely find a home in Akwa Ibom state.

Agriculture:

Agricultural produce in the state includes: Cassava, Yam, Cocoyam, Plantain, Banana, Maize, fruits, Vegetables, Oil palm, Rubber, Raffia, Gruelina, Cocoa, Coffee, Coconut and Citrus.

Mineral/Natural Resources:

Oil and Gas, Limestone, Clay, Salt, Silver Nitrate, Glass Sand, various species of Wood, Fish and other sea-foods.
