Edo state is one of the states distinguished by the relative homogeneity of her people. The most persuasive logic is the cultural and linguistic affinities that exist among the various ethnic groups. Many of the communities trace their root to the ancient Benin Kingdom. Benin civilisation flourished between the 15th and 18th centuries and is famous for its brass, bronze and ivory sculpture. The Benin kingdom rose to it's apogee in the 19th Century and became well known in Europe. The kingdom collapsed under the European (British) pressure that disagreed with the king over diplomatic visit which the king was not ready to receive at a particular time. The kingdom was invaded in 1897 and the king; Oba Ovonramwen sent on exile in Calabar.

The state was created in 1991, after being part of Western region 1947-1963; Midwestern region 1963-1967; Midwest State 1967-1976 and and Bendel State 1976- 1991. In 1986, a notorious armed robber; Lawrence Anini; Alias the LAW laid siege on the state. He was arrested on December 3, 1986 and months later executed. In 1991, the old Bendel State was split and Delta State was created out of it, what was left of the old Bendel State was renamed Edo State. Edo state is located in South South zone of Nigeria.  

Boundaries/Neighbours:

In the North is Kogi State, in the East and South by Delta State, in the West by Ekiti and Ondo States.

Topography:

Low lying except in the North. The state lays within two vegetations, the forest belt; comprising the South and Central part and the Guinea Savannah belt of the Northern part. The Ovia and Orhionmwon rivers are the major rivers in the state

Climate:

The state has both wet and dry seasons. December to March is the driest while April to November is wet. Average temperature is 280C.

Education:

Edo state is one of the most educationally advanced states in Nigeria. The state has four Universities; one Federal, one state and two privately owned. Also the state has one College of Education, one college of Agric and two Polytechnics; one state owned and one Federal - Auchi Polytechnic.

Economy:

Edo state is largely an agrarian state; hence agricultural production sustains a good percentage of the populace both as a source of employment and for sustenance. The state has the following industries: Edo Pharmaceuticals Limited, Bendel Brewery Limited, Bendel Feed and Flour Mills Limited; among others; most of the Firms have either been privatised or on joint venture with private investors. The strategic location of the state; linking the north and south, east and west with good roads and airport had made her a centre of commerce. Also the peaceful and hospitality of the people placed the state in an enviable position for investors. Edo state stands out as one of the most peaceful states in the country. Investors and tourists will definitely find a home in the BIG Heart of the Nation, Edo state.

Agriculture:

Agricultural produce in the state includes; cassava, maize, yam, plantain, fruits, pineapple, cashew, palm produce, rubber.

Mineral/Natural Resources:

Limestone, natural gas, Petroleum, Bitumen, Clay, Granite, Kaolin, Marble and precious stones. Timbers (wood) are in abundance throughout the state..
